Montemayor: Monuments, Wine and Campiña

At the foot of the castle, a linear viewpoint offers views across the entire Campiña de Córdoba. From one viewpoint, the Ermita de San José, olive groves and traditional agricultural land of the Campiña can be seen.

Montemayor is located in Andalusia, the autonomous community in southern Spain comprising eight provinces. Andalusia's regional diversity includes Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, large cities, white villages, mountain ranges and protected natural areas; the region's identity also encompasses cities and Moorish heritage, flamenco traditions, coastlines, rural inland areas and mountain landscapes.

Culture

The Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Montemayor is protected as a cultural heritage site in the Monument category and, together with the Castle of the Counts of Alcaudete and Dukes of Frías, forms a monumental ensemble.

The Museo de la Plata in the Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción displays liturgical goldsmithing. These works include two processional crosses from the 17th century, as well as several works by the Cordoban goldsmith Damián de Castro dating from 1769 to 1777.

The Tercia de Montemayor retains its original roof structures and a rural fireplace of ethnological interest. Its location beside the castle in the highest part of the town connects this building with the area near the parish church and the Plaza de la Constitución.

The Museo de Ulia houses an archaeological collection that illustrates Montemayor's past in four rooms.

The Castillo de Dos Hermanas is an Arab fortress. It was probably built during Muslim rule on the Iberian Peninsula between the 9th and 11th centuries. The Castillo is approximately 7 km from Montemayor.

Archaeological excavations at the Castillo de Dos Hermanas have uncovered the wall circuit and several towers. They have also revealed the access arch to the weapons courtyard, stables and other rooms. The visible parts of the complex therefore include both the fortifications and areas associated with their former use within the fortress.

A major outdoor contemporary art festival transforms Montemayor into a museum city.

Wine

At the Centro de Interpretación Memorias del Pedro Ximénez, panels and photographs illustrate the history and production of wine in the Montilla–Moriles area. The same Centro contains wine barrels in which Pedro Ximénez is macerated. Historical information about wine production is therefore displayed there alongside the barrels in which the aforementioned wine is macerated.

Nature

The linear route can be walked year-round and can also be travelled on horseback or by bicycle. It is 7.3 km long. On foot, the linear route takes approximately 2 to 3 hours.

A natural area created through reforestation has geological and landscape value.
