Palenciana: Church, Festivals and Hiking Trail

The Arroyo de las Cañas – PR-A 8 hiking trail lies within the municipality of Palenciana, on the border between two comarcas in the provinces of Málaga and Córdoba. It lies between the Llanos de Antequera and the Subbética. The hiking trail can be completed on foot.

Church and Townscape

The Parroquia de San Miguel is Palenciana’s most significant monument. It occupies one side of the central Plaza de Nuestra Señora del Carmen. The present-day Parroquia de San Miguel was built in 1774. Its floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross. The church displays characteristics of 18th-century Baroque architecture.

Two 19th-century houses stand on the Plaza del Carmen. Together with the façade of the parish church, they form an urban ensemble. The Ermita de San Lucas was financed at the end of the 1980s through a public fundraising campaign. This fundraising campaign was initiated by José Espadas. The arcade porticoes surrounding the Ermita are particularly striking.

The townscape is therefore defined by both the religious building on the Plaza and the two 19th-century houses, as well as the arcade porticoes of the Ermita.

Festivals and Processions

During Holy Week, four processions pass through the streets of Palenciana. The Feria de la Virgen del Carmen takes place from 14 to 17 August. It includes the Revoleo de bandera in front of the Virgin of Carmen. During the Romería de San Isidro, a procession takes place around the spring of the Arroyo Marbella stream. The Romería features traditional games. The festival’s Romera is elected by popular vote.

The festival traditions are thus spread across Holy Week, the August festival and the Romería de San Isidro. In addition to the processions, the elements mentioned also include the Revoleo de bandera, the traditional games and the election of the Romera.

Regional Surroundings

The wider regional surroundings of Palenciana include Castillo Anzur, a castle. The Museo Bodega El Alfoli, a museum, is also located there. The Palacio de Erisana, a palace, is likewise situated in the wider regional surroundings. Castillo del Moral, another castle, is located there as well.
