Villaviciosa de Córdoba: Nature, Trails and Cultural Heritage

The trail offers opportunities to observe deer and birds of prey, including griffon vultures, cinereous vultures, and golden eagles. It passes through the Cabeza Aguda public mountain area, with extensive reforested pine forests. Access to the Sendero de Las Fuentes is at kilometre 19.9 of the road between Villaviciosa de Córdoba and Posadas, via the Camino de los Llanos. The Sendero de Las Fuentes passes by the Casa de las Parrillas Viejas and also passes several fountains.

Culture

The Puente Califal over the Guadiato River in the municipality of Villaviciosa de Córdoba is considered one of the most significant historical infrastructures of Andalusia’s medieval cultural heritage and is an exceptional example of the medieval engineering of al-Andalus. The Casa de la Tercia has been entered in general terms in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Heritage. Névalo can be reached via the CC-411 and is located three kilometres from Villaviciosa de Córdoba. Névalo is a visitable medieval military castle in Villaviciosa de Córdoba, classified as Islamic-medieval or caliphal. The location of today’s town centre of Villaviciosa de Córdoba was determined by the location of the Ermita de la Virgen de Villaviciosa at the centre of the present-day town centre. The Ermita de la Virgen de Villaviciosa dates from the 18th century and has a Baroque portal topped by a bell gable. The Iglesia de San José is located on Plaza de España in the centre of Villaviciosa de Córdoba and contains Cordoban silverwork from the 17th century.

Townscape

Parque de la Verbena is a public landscaped area south of the town centre of Villaviciosa de Córdoba. It offers public recreational facilities, including a children’s play area and areas for physical exercise. Parque de la Verbena includes a fountain with a livestock watering trough, recalling the municipality’s historic connection with water and rural life.

The Ruta de Villaviciosa al camping de Puente Nuevo begins in the town centre of Villaviciosa de Córdoba and heads towards the Navalaencina area. The Ruta del Barranco de la Huesa includes a section from Córdoba to Villaviciosa that begins in Santa María de Trassierra and ends at the Puente del Boquerones over the Guadiato River.
