Diezma: Landscape, Church and Andalusian Traditions

Diezma is considered a vantage point over the Sierra Nevada and is suitable for taking panoramic photographs. The landscape combines protected areas, mountain ranges, gorges, streams and distinctive rock formations with individual mountains, viewpoints and a hiking trail listed in the geopark plan.

Landscape

The protected Sierra de Arana area extends across the municipal territories of thirteen municipalities in the Province of Granada; Diezma is one of these municipalities. The Sierra de Huétor is characterised by medium-height mountain ranges, narrow gorges and streams, as well as rock escarpments and limestone karst formations. The Cerro de las Mentiras mountain and the Peña de la Cruz mountain are located in the vicinity of Diezma. In the wider surrounding region of Diezma are the Mirador del Castañar viewpoint and the Puntal de la Canilla peak. Thus, the aforementioned landscape references extend from the municipal territory of the protected area through the nearby surroundings to the wider surrounding region.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Anunciación church in Diezma was built in 1545. Diezma is a named station on the Ruta de Ibn al-Jatib between Murcia and Granada. The church and the route thus represent two different historical points of reference for the town: a building within Diezma and a station on a connection between the two cities.

Traditions

Those wishing to determine the date of the Fiesta de San Blas in Diezma will generally find it held on the weekend closest to 3 February. The date is therefore tied to a weekend near this date and not to the same day of the week every year. The rosco pastries made in honour of Saint Blaise are among the defining traditions of the fiesta. After the roscos have been distributed, the fiesta includes a procession or pilgrimage to Cerro de San Blas. The A-92 motorway passes through the surroundings of Diezma and provides direct access from Granada, Almería and Seville.
