El Varadero: Seafaring District of Motril

El Varadero is the seafaring district of Motril (Granada). It developed around the historic and only commercial, leisure and fishing port on the coast of Granada.

Culture

The fishing activity associated with El Varadero dates back to the Phoenician, Roman and Muslim eras. For the fishing settlements there, this activity was one of the most important sources of livelihood.

Every year on 16 July, the Fiestas in honour of the Virgen del Carmen take place in Varadero. The celebrations last almost a week. The programme includes music, fairground rides, sporting activities and communal meals.

The procession of the Virgen del Carmen first passes through the streets of Varadero. It then boards at the Lonja Pesquera. By sea, it proceeds along the coast of Motril.

Every year, one of the fishing boats moored at the quay is selected. It accompanies the Virgen del Carmen at sea during the celebrations.

Another place is Restabal.

Nature

At Playa de las Azucenas, wooden walkways have been installed along the beach area. Raised walkways have been installed over the flooded areas.

A covered outdoor area for receiving visitors has been set up at Playa de las Azucenas. An accessible toilet module has also been installed there.

An access path and a pergola have been completed at Playa de las Azucenas. Both are in operation. The natural area is considered to be of natural, educational and landscape interest.
