Discover Puerto Moral: Church, Mills and Nature

Puerto Moral is located in the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Natural Park. The town is situated in Andalusia in southern Spain, an autonomous community with eight provinces. Andalusia’s landscape includes Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, large cities, white villages, mountain ranges and protected natural areas. The region’s cultural heritage also encompasses Moorish heritage, flamenco traditions, rural inland areas and mountainous landscapes. Puerto Moral therefore combines its connection to a protected natural area with historic and traditional sites in the town and its immediate surroundings.

Culture

The Iglesia de San Pedro y San Pablo is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC), an Asset of Cultural Interest. The church was designed in the Gothic-Renaissance style. Its floor plan has a single nave. Construction is thought to have begun in the 13th or 14th century. The church was remodelled in the 16th and 18th centuries. Several historical phases can therefore be distinguished in the building: the presumed medieval beginnings were followed by changes in two later centuries. The BIC protection, the style and the single-nave floor plan are among the church’s characteristic features.

Mills and Sightseeing

Molino Tolete is part of a leisure route prepared for sightseeing at the Barranco de la Madrona, south of Puerto Moral’s town centre. At Molino 2, the traditional milling technology was faithfully reconstructed, allowing the mill to be operated properly again. Molino 2 is shown to tourists on request. Nature

El Pantano is located in the north of the municipality of Puerto Moral, on the Rivera de las Yerbas. There are areas prepared for tourism in its immediate surroundings. A viewpoint overlooking the reservoir is located on the access road to El Pantano. From this viewpoint, areas of the provinces of Huelva and Badajoz can also be seen. The natural area therefore includes the reservoir, the Rivera de las Yerbas waterway, the prepared areas in the immediate surroundings and the viewpoint on the access road. The view extends beyond the municipality to named areas in two provinces.

Traditions

Since 2011, the town of Bethlehem has been recreated in Puerto Moral in numerous scenes staged by local residents. The Bethlehem display involves visitors through interaction with the performers and the landscape. It also invites visitors to learn about numerous traditional crafts. The display therefore comprises several elements: the recreation of the town of Bethlehem, the numerous scenes staged by local residents, the incorporation of the landscape and direct interaction with the performers.
