Nature

Below Benahavís, the Guadalmina runs through the Las Angosturas area between limestone walls. In Benahavís, 32 of the 54 known dragonfly species in the province of Málaga can be found. The Sendero de las Libélulas del Guadalmina is a pleasant walking route for people with a normal level of physical fitness, provided they have no mobility impairments. A lime kiln, bearing witness to bygone times, is located along this route.

The landscape thus combines the course of the Guadalmina with the limestone walls of Las Angosturas. Along the walking route, the dragonfly populations and the historic lime kiln are situated within the same local context.

Waterways and Hiking

The Sendero de las Acequias is an easy, circular hike suitable for the whole family. The Sendero de las Acequias crosses the Cañón de las Angosturas via a wooden bridge. On this route, you first reach the Poza de las Mozas. More than ten centuries ago, Arab communities diverted part of the water from the Guadalmina River to irrigate their gardens and farms.

The route connects the wooden bridge, the Cañón de las Angosturas and the Poza de las Mozas in a set sequence. At the same time, the watercourse recalls the Guadalmina’s former use: more than ten centuries ago, part of the river was diverted for gardens and farms. Thus, the route and the historic irrigation system are linked to the same river.

Views and Cultural Heritage

The route to Castillo de Montemayor begins in the town centre of Benahavís. It leads to a fortress from which up to 100 kilometres of coastline, as well as the African coast, can be seen. The Torre de la Leonera in Benahavís is registered as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC).

Tradition

The Romería in honour of the Virgen del Rosario takes place on 7 October and leads in Benahavís to the Charco de las Mozas, where a Eucharistic celebration is held in a recently built Ermita.

The municipal golf academy of Benahavís is located next to the town centre and adjoins the four-star Gran Hotel Benahavís. It has a driving range, a large bunker, an approach area and a putting green.
