Alhaurín de la Torre: Sierra de Mijas, Culture and Hiking Trails

Alhaurín de la Torre lies between the Málaga metropolitan area and the Valle del Guadalhorce region on the Costa del Sol. The municipality is located in the Sierra de Mijas, which forms part of the Cordillera Penibética, and is watered by the Guadalhorce River.

Location and Landscape

Jabalcuza features a natural viewpoint at an altitude of 679 metres. The mountain has various cliffs and terraced levels and dominates the urban area. One variant of the Gran Senda de Málaga offers views of the Valle del Guadalhorce and passes through dolomitic terrain in the Los Tajos area.

Another variant of the Gran Senda de Málaga is 28.8 kilometres long, runs through the Sierra de Mijas and connects Jarapalos with the Puerto de los Pescadores. The route between Arroyo Zambrana and Jabalcuza was the first officially approved hiking trail in Alhaurín de la Torre, is slightly more than three kilometres long and is integrated into the GR 249 of the Gran Senda de Málaga.

Traces of History

Early local settlement traces include permanent settlements dating from 1000 to 700 BC; the first Iberian inhabitants traded with the Phoenicians. Several villas dating from the Roman period have been found, associated with agricultural production and metal extraction. During the Islamic period, the population was concentrated in alquerías, or hamlets.

The Acueducto de la Fuente del Rey is an unfinished 18th-century engineering structure of historical and technical significance. The Arcos de Zapata form the most monumental section of the Acueducto de la Fuente del Rey; some of the arches are obscured by residential buildings. The Nasrid Tower of Torrealquería retains two levels, is up to seven metres high and has load-bearing exterior walls up to 2.50 metres thick.

Culture and Events

The Festival Flamenco Torre del Cante takes place in Alhaurín de la Torre. Finca El Portón is a venue for cultural events and outdoor activities and has three exhibition rooms for cultural works.

Portón del Jazz takes place at Finca Municipal El Portón in summer 2026 and offers a programme featuring national and international artists on Friday evenings throughout the month. At the Museo Andaluz de la Educación, 122 visits by schools and secondary educational institutions were organised, involving a total of 6,300 students, along with 17 scientific workshops for a total of 600 people, five holiday camps with 120 participants, and 13 talks or conferences with a total of 1,560 participants.

Outdoor Activities

Sunview Park offers an open Land Rover drive through the mountainous landscape, with views of the Valle de Málaga. Sunview Park also has a disc golf course in natural surroundings. The park offers horseback rides on trails around Alhaurín de la Torre; the experience is also suitable for people with no riding experience.

Sunview Park is located on C. Comedias in Alhaurín de la Torre (Málaga) and has on-site parking. For guests travelling by bus from Málaga, the park offers pick-up from the bus stop in the Barriada Torrealquería.

The zip line at Sunview Park reaches speeds of over 100 km/h and is situated at an altitude of 190 metres; it is described as the longest zip line in Southern Europe and the longest double zip line in Spain.
