From the upper part of Canillas de Aceituno, extensive views stretch across the AxarquÃa to the Mediterranean. Mount Maroma is located in the vicinity of Canillas de Aceituno. The summit of Cerros del Puerto is also located nearby.
Nature and Trails
The Casa de la Nieve trail leads from Canillas de Aceituno up the southern, or sunny, side to La Maroma. It is named after a traditional route used by neveros, who preserved snow and transported it to remote places. Stage 8 of the GR 249 runs through the municipal areas of Canillas de Aceituno, AlcaucÃn, La Viñuela and Periana. The Sendero El Saltillo follows new paths and walkways to a 54-metre-long suspension bridge located 70 metres above the RÃo Almanchares.
The trails connect named landscape features with historical traces and different ways of exploring the town and its surroundings. The ascent to La Maroma, the GR 249 stage and the Sendero El Saltillo each represent their own geographical context, extending from the municipal area to the river landscape of the RÃo Almanchares.
Culture and History
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario y San León Magno was built in the 16th century in the Gothic-Mudéjar style on the site of an earlier mosque; it was remodelled in the 19th century. The church is located in the upper part of the town, and its terrace offers extensive views of the surrounding landscape.
In the relevant area of the historic town centre, continuous settlement dates from the 16th century to the present day; an Islamic settlement also existed here. The winding, narrow streets and the layout of the houses suggest that the town has Moorish origins.
Plaza del Castillo is a sloping, triangular square on the former site of the town's defensive fortress. There is an information board on the square, and a small viewpoint can be reached via the road opposite.
The C.A.C. Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Francisco Hernández museum is located in the vicinity of Canillas de Aceituno. The ancient sites tomb 1 of Trayamar, tomb 4 of Trayamar and tomb 3 of Trayamar are also located nearby.

Playa de Algarrobo Costa beach is located in the vicinity of Canillas de Aceituno. Playa Torre Del Mar beach is also located near the town.
