Riogordo and its impressive cultural sites

Riogordo combines living traditions with archaeological traces and paths through the local area. El Paso de Riogordo is a dramatic depiction of the life, Passion and death of Jesus Christ. Performances of El Paso de Riogordo on Good Friday and Holy Saturday have been documented since 1951. In 1996, the performance was recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional de España. Riogordo is therefore home to a firmly established religious performance alongside places where the everyday life of earlier generations can be traced.

Museum, mosaics and traces of earlier times

The Museo Etnográfico de Riogordo is located above the ruins of a 17th-century olive mill. The museum houses rural household implements that illustrate the life and customs of the region’s ancestors. The Museo Etnográfico also presents local customs through the Mediterranean production trilogy of bread, wine and oil. This gives visitors a tangible insight into the craft and domestic traditions connected with local history.

Riogordo’s archaeological heritage also reaches far back in time. The Mosaicos de la Villa de Auta are Roman remains from the 3rd century. At Cerro de la Capellanía, remains from the Bronze Age form part of Riogordo’s archaeological heritage. Further remains found at Tajo de Gomer complete this picture. Circular trail along two watercourses

The Sendero Circular Río de La Cueva – Arroyo de Las Morenas is located in the municipality of Riogordo. It runs parallel to the Río de la Cueva and the Arroyo de Las Morenas through the local area and its surroundings. The circular trail also passes the Cooperativa de Aceite Agro-Olivarera Riogordo. Along the route, both watercourses and the connection with local olive oil production are therefore central points of interest. Different sections of the trail help combine cultural and landscape themes in a shared exploration.

Olive oil, snails and local festivals

The Molienda de Riogordo directly draws on the olive oil tradition: during the Molienda, guided tours of olive groves and the oil-making process are offered. Another culinary speciality can be found at the Día del Caracol, which has been recognised as an event of provincial tourist interest in Málaga. The Día del Caracol includes performances by rondallas, music bands, and choir and dance groups. “Caracoles en caldillo” are cooked in the local style in their own broth and served with olives, beer and wine from the region. This festival thus combines a dish with music, dance and regional drinks.
