Coria del Río on the Guadalquivir: Culture, Nature and Trails

Coria del Río lies on the right bank of the River Guadalquivir, about 12 kilometres south of Seville. The municipality forms part of the Paraje Natural del Brazo del Este.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de Santa María de la Estrella is the oldest parish church in Coria del Río. Its Gothic-Mudéjar architecture dates from the late 13th century and was extended with Baroque additions; as a Bien de Interés Cultural, it is protected.

At the eastern edge of Cerro de San Juan stands the Ermita de San Juan Bautista, above the River Guadalquivir. It houses the Santísimo Cristo de la Vera Cruz, a sculpture created around 1500. The hermitage is designated as a Monument and Bien de Interés Cultural.

Blas Infante designed and built the Casa de Blas Infante in 1931. In 2006, it was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monumento category. Visits are always guided and require advance booking. Coria del Río is also part of the Ruta de Blas Infante, which connects nine municipalities associated with his life and Andalusianism.

The permanent exhibition in Sala 28F of the Museo de la Autonomía de Andalucía traces the Andalusian autonomy process from the Constitution of Antequera of 1883 to the ratification of the Statute of Autonomy for Andalusia in the 2007 referendum.

A statue of Hasekura Tsunenaga, donated by the government of the Japanese city of Sendai, stands on Paseo Carlos de Mesa. The Sala Temática Japonesa Virginio Carvajal Japón displays reproductions of documents from Hasekura Tsunenaga's journey, as well as Japanese artistic and traditional objects. It also houses a model of the Hanami, which was donated to the site of the Japanese pavilion and created for the 1992 Seville World Expo; it was on display there throughout the exhibition. Coria del Río offers a route dedicated to Hasekura Tsunenaga.

The Centro Cultural de la Villa "Pastora Soler" is a public cultural institution with an open-air theatre and a covered theatre. It hosts concerts, theatre performances, conferences, courses, exhibitions and book presentations.

Nature and Trails

The Ruta ornitológica runs through the municipality of Coria del Río and is used for observing and identifying birds. Its sites include the Guadalquivir, the Guadaira, the Paraje Natural del Brazo del Este and the Dehesa La Atalaya.

The Ruta geohistórica conveys the historical transformation of the landscape of Coria del Río. The Ruta botánica leads through the municipality's natural areas, including the Aula de la Naturaleza in the Dehesa La Atalaya.

The Aula de la Naturaleza can be reached on foot, by bicycle, on horseback or by another non-motorised means of transport via the Corredor Verde Metropolitano de Sevilla and the livestock trail Vereda de los Palacios.

The Sendero nocturno is an approximately 3-kilometre circular route through the Dehesa La Atalaya and is suitable for individuals and family groups. The Sendero Dehesa Atalaya can be walked independently using the municipality's accompanying guidebook or with a guide requested from the environmental department. As a guided tour, it covers approximately 3 kilometres through the dehesa and includes environmental interpretation activities.

In the Dehesa La Atalaya, visitors can take part in scientific bird ringing and birdwatching. The Ruta de Rastros, huellas y señales involves tracking animal traces in order to learn about and understand the ecological fabric of a natural area. The dehesa has three routes of different lengths, between 1,500 and 4,000 metres, aimed at different age groups.

The Guadalquivir and Local Festivals

The Ruta fluvial on the River Guadalquivir is conducted by boat and stops at several points of interest. Paseo Carlos de Mesa and its landing stage on Calle Martínez de León are among the places worth visiting in Coria del Río.

The Fiesta del Albur takes place at the beginning of May. Around 1,000 kilograms of fried albur fish are handed out free of charge on Paseo Carlos de Mesa next to the Guadalquivir.
