Seville: Culture, History and Routes along the Guadalquivir

Seville Cathedral houses the tomb of Christopher Columbus. Together with the Real Alcázar and the Archivo de Indias, it forms an ensemble recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Culture and history

The Archivo de Indias preserves 43,000 bundles of documents, 80 million pages and 8,000 maps; these include handwritten texts by Christopher Columbus and Magellan.

The Real Alcázar is the oldest royal palace in Europe still in active use and combines Islamic, Mudéjar, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles.

The Giralda was originally a minaret and is now a bell tower.

Museums

The Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla was founded in 1835 and opened to the public in 1841 in the former La Merced Calzada convent.

Its Baroque galleries dedicated to the Sevillian school are a particular focus; Velázquez, Zurbarán and Murillo are named as important masters of the 17th century.

The Díaz Velázquez legacy at the Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares de Sevilla comprises almost 6,000 embroidery and lace pieces.

The Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares de Sevilla also holds a collection of Andalusian folk ceramics, which is probably one of the most comprehensive in Europe.

The Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo hosts temporary exhibitions, educational programs, courses, workshops, concerts, film series and lectures.

Ceramics and cuisine

The Casa de Pilatos is an Andalusian Mudéjar-Renaissance palace that combines Gothic, Islamic, Renaissance and Baroque elements.

The Triana Ceramic Center presents the history of Triana’s ceramic tradition and serves as an information and interpretation center for visits to the neighborhood.

The Triana Ceramic Center displays restored ceramic kilns and a permanent exhibition on Sevillian ceramics.

The Mercado de Triana includes the Centro de Interpretación del Castillo de San Jorge, where the remains of the former castle and an Almohad cemetery can be visited.

The Mercado de Triana offers stalls selling fruit, vegetables, fish, meat and freshly baked bread, as well as a cooking school, tapas bars, cafés and shops selling local products.

Routes

The Paseo Nuestra Señora de la O is a 525-meter-long, tree-lined promenade on the right bank of the Guadalquivir in Triana.

Parque de María Luisa can be explored on foot, by bicycle or by carriage.

The Ruta de Carlos V is a walkable urban route connecting important historic sites in the center of Seville.

Boats can travel along the canal around the Plaza de España.

The Metrocentro provides access to the monumental center of Seville by above-ground light rail.
