El Pedroso: Sierra Morena, Culture and Hiking Trails

El Pedroso is one of the municipalities within the Parque Natural Sierra Morena de Sevilla. The Arroyo Las Cañas Geo-Route includes geological information panels intended to help visitors understand and appreciate the area's geological and landscape wealth.

Culture

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Consolación was entered as a monument in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Heritage. It is a three-nave temple in the Gothic-Mudéjar style and was built over the remains of a Roman tower and a Moorish fortress. The church contains an altarpiece by Martínez Montañés. It depicts the Immaculate Conception and dates from 1608. The church also contains a crucifix by Pedro Millán dating from 1500.

History

The upper floor of the Centro de la Cultura „Escuelas Nuevas“ houses a museum area dedicated to the history of writing. Using reproductions, this area illustrates the development of writing. This ranges from clay tablets, scrolls, codices, and papyri to printing and book publishing. The presentation thus spans various forms of transmission: scrolls, codices, and papyri follow clay tablets, before printing and book publishing appear as later stages. Reproductions are used for this presentation. The Centro de la Cultura „Escuelas Nuevas“ also includes the „Aula Ingeniero Elorza“. The Aula is dedicated to Francisco Antonio de Elorza y Aguirre. The „Aula Ingeniero Elorza“ focuses on the importance of mining to the development of the municipality of El Pedroso. The Centro de la Cultura „Escuelas Nuevas“ is considered one of the outstanding examples of civil architecture in the comarca. It was designed and built in the first half of the 20th century by Aurelio Gómez Millán.

Hiking

A 2 km-long linear trail of moderate to low difficulty begins at the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Consolación. It leads to viewpoints overlooking El Pedroso and the reservoir of the Río Huéznar. A public hiking trail is 19.5 km long and follows a linear route. It connects the railway stations of El Pedroso and Cazalla-Constantina along the banks of the Rivera del Hueznar. A 20.4 km-long circular trail leads to the Mirador de El Azulaque; the trail begins along the same route as the Sendero de las Cañas.

A guided excursion to the Minas de La Lima is offered in El Pedroso on private property. Railway line C3 connects Seville with Mérida and stops in El Pedroso.

Within the municipality of El Pedroso, the town council sets up street stalls managed by Artesanos Pedroseños. The participating artisans sell handicraft products that they have made themselves.
