Church Art, Archway and Cante Jondo

Martín de la Jara reveals several clearly distinct sides: sacred art, architectural traces, a local pilgrimage, a lagoon rich in birdlife and a Cante Jondo festival. A visit can therefore combine cultural and landscape observations without reducing the town to just one theme.

In the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, the altarpiece depicts a crucified Christ, Nuestra Señora del Rosario and an 18th-century San Antonio de Papua. The baptistery of the same church contains a 16th-century image of Christ from the Sevillian school. The two works anchor different periods of origin in a specific church setting and provide two clearly identifiable art-historical points of reference during the visit.

The exterior also features distinctive details. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario has a tower on one side and a belfry on the opposite side; both are fitted with bells. The Arco de la Teja is an old gateway in the crenellated town, with three round-arched openings. The church and archway thus represent two different forms of architectural interest: sacred architecture with its bell structures and a historic town gate with a clearly articulated opening.

The Festival de Cante Jondo de Martín de la Jara is organised by the Ayuntamiento de Martín de la Jara and the Peña Cultural Flamenca El Niño de la Jara. The XLVII edition of the Festival de Cante Jondo was announced for 23 July in Martín de la Jara. The date and the announced edition are therefore among the town’s specific cultural references.

Lagoon, Pilgrimage and Mountain Landscape

In July, a local pilgrimage of the Virgen del Carmen takes place to Laguna del Gosque. During migration periods, Laguna del Gosque serves as a wintering and resting area, as well as a breeding ground for numerous bird species. Thus, religious tradition and a clearly described habitat for birds come together at this landscape site. The Sierra de los Caballos, a mountain, is also located in the surroundings of Martín de la Jara.

There is one specific point to note when travelling by train: Martín de la Jara has no railway station. The region’s cultural and landscape attractions extend beyond the town.
