Montellano: Nature, Hiking Trails and Architectural History

Natural surroundings between rock and Mediterranean vegetation

Montellano is home to the Tajos de Mogarejo natural monument, which was placed under protection in 2003. Its cliffs, which rise more than 30 metres, and its diverse wildlife, which also includes carob trees, give the landscape a distinct natural character. This makes nature observation and an overview of the site's protection history two useful factual focal points for planning a day trip.

Riparian forests with numerous tamarisks grow along the banks of the stream in the Tajos de Mogarejo area. The surrounding area contains Mediterranean woodland and scrubland with carob trees, dwarf palms and rosemary. The vegetation therefore ranges from streamside riparian forests to Mediterranean scrubland.

A hiking trail signposted by the Federación Andaluza de Montañismo begins on the central Avenida de Ronda in Montellano. Along this route there is a reforested pine forest interspersed with holm oaks, typical Mediterranean shrub vegetation and numerous orchids, which appear from mid-February onwards. The starting point and the time when the orchids appear provide two factual reference points for planning a hike.

Paragliding and hang gliding are listed as activities available in the Tajos de Mogarejo natural area.

Gothic castle and historic architectural styles

Castillo de Cote is a Gothic castle built at the end of the 13th century on the orders of Alfonso X. The fortified complex consists of two concentric areas surrounded by walls. Its tower chapel is classified as a tetrabsidal donjon and is considered unique in the architecture of the Iberian Peninsula. The site therefore combines a construction date at the end of the 13th century, a double ring structure and a distinctive chapel design.

The restored Molino Pintao grain mill is located in the Tajos de Mogarejo natural monument area. The Puente de la Vera Cruz is a single-arch bridge from the 17th century. The floor plan of another building has three naves separated by pairs of Tuscan columns. The building dates from the 18th century, was constructed from limestone and pink marble from the Sierra de San Pablo, and has a Baroque stone façade.

The Romería de San Isidro Labrador de Montellano has been recognised as a festival of national tourist interest in Andalusia.

Local produce and culinary tradition

Montellano's local products include country bread, extra virgin olive oil, as well as chacina and cured meats, particularly morcilla de asadura. At the 4th Feria de la Matanza de Montellano, traditionally produced chorizos, morcillas, chicharrones and other traditional products from home slaughtering were presented. Demonstrations of sausage-making and various tastings were also offered. The culinary theme thus combines specific products with artisanal production and tastings.
