Culture and History

The Baños Árabes in Palomares del Río are a complex dating from the Almohad period, between the 12th and 13th centuries. Protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural, they are unique in the rural surroundings of the Province of Seville.

This archaeological complex includes a garden designed in the Hispano-Muslim style. Its fountains are decorated with colorful tiles and connected by channels.

Hacienda Casa Alegre dates from the 16th century and preserves almost all of its areas, including the manor courtyard, service courtyard, olive mill and residence.

The tower of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Estrella is of Mudéjar origin, and its first level features seven horseshoe and multifoil arches.

Hacienda Ulloa, a building dating from the 18th century, preserves original wooden beams and a press stone in its olive mill.

Today, only a 16th-century mill building remains of Hacienda de Córdoba.

The tower of Hacienda San Rafael dates from the early 20th century. It is attributed to the Sevillian architect Aníbal González and is considered an example of Andalusian Regionalism.

Hacienda Santa María dates from the 18th century. Its olive-oil mill building and counterweight tower are well preserved.

Hacienda El Molino also dates from the 18th century and has a counterweight tower that was formerly used for olive-oil production.

These historic complexes display different forms of preservation. At Casa Alegre, almost all of the areas mentioned above have been preserved, whereas today only a single mill building remains of Hacienda de Córdoba. At Ulloa, the focus is on the original wooden beams and press stone, while at Santa María it is on the mill building and counterweight tower.

The buildings also span a broad range of periods: The Baños Árabes date back to the Almohad period of the 12th to 13th centuries, several haciendas date from the 16th or 18th century, and the tower of San Rafael belongs to the early 20th century. The church tower adds a building of Mudéjar origin to this sequence.

Gastronomy

The 3rd Ruta de la Tapa Mozárabe in Palomares del Río featured tapas, desserts and cocktails offered from April 30 to May 10, inspired by Palomares' historic gastronomy.

The event therefore brought together several gastronomic forms at once: tapas, desserts and cocktails were offered during the stated period. Their common link was the historic gastronomy of Palomares, which served as the inspiration for the selection.
