Castilblanco de los Arroyos – Culture, Festivals and Trails

The original castle and the Ermita de Santa María Magdalena were located on the Cerro de la Magdalena; this site is considered the origin of the town of Castilblanco de los Arroyos.

Culture and History

The Iglesia Parroquial del Divino Salvador is a building with an original Mudéjar structure; its façade and tower underwent their last remodeling in the 18th century (1705–1769). It consists of three naves separated by semicircular arches. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Escardiel was built on a site with a medieval history and is designed in the Mudéjar style. Casa de la Sierra is an emblematic building in the town, constructed in 1923. The Museo Etnológico Casa La Sierra presents local activities and crafts such as the production of plant-fiber items, traditional shoemaking and honey production.

Festivals and Religious Sites

The Real Romería de Nuestra Señora de Escardiel is classified as an event of national tourist interest. The Fiesta del Agua has been part of the festival program of Castilblanco de los Arroyos since 1986; its traditional edition takes place in the Plaza Amarilla and includes a lively water fight with buckets. The Albergue del Peregrino has 30 beds, separate bathrooms and showers for women and men, a kitchen, a living and dining room, and a washing machine. In Castilblanco de los Arroyos, the Convención Apícola is designated as an event dedicated to beekeeping, bees and honey.

Trails and Landscape

The Vía pecuaria Vereda la Cuesta del Señor in Castilblanco de los Arroyos bears the designation SL-A 322 and has been definitively designated as a trail for sporting use. The Vereda La Cuesta del Señor is almost 5 km long. Castilblanco de los Arroyos is the reference location for the Camino del Piquillo; the total length is 5.5 km and the approximate duration is one hour. The Camino del Piquillo is an unpaved trail suitable for walks by bicycle and on horseback. The route to the Pantano de Los Molinos is 12 km long, takes approximately six hours and begins at the end of Calle El Ejido, where the Camino de Escardiel starts. The route section ends at the reservoir; a wide variety of bird and fish species are designated for observation there. The Ruta Camino del Pimpollar passes through dehesa landscapes with holm oaks and cork oaks and crosses numerous small streams. The Ermita de San Benito is located in the foothills of the Sierra Morena, 12 km from Castilblanco de los Arroyos and 1 km from the Río Viar. Castilblanco de los Arroyos is the reference location for the Ruta Vía de la Plata; the total length is 7.5 km and the approximate duration is two hours. The Ruta de los Melonares is 31 km long, takes around eight hours and, due to its length, is recommended for completion over several days.
