Alcalá de Guadaíra: Mills, Museum and Paths along the Guadaíra

At the Museo de Alcalá de Guadaíra, the permanent exhibition presents more than seventy works of landscape painting depicting the area around Alcalá de Guadaíra. The works come from a period spanning a century. This places the landscape painting within a broad chronological framework. Temporary exhibitions are held on the upper floor, either produced by the museum itself or originating from other cultural institutions. The upper floor thus complements the permanent presentation with exhibitions backed by different institutional organizers.

Culture

The building of the Harinera del Guadaíra now houses the interpretation centre of the baking industry. Machines and information panels explain Alcalá de Guadaíra’s history in connection with milling and bread production. The period presented extends from the 12th century to the present day. The historical development is made visible on several levels: the factory points to industrial processing, the machines to the technical aspects of milling, and the information panels to the connection with everyday life in the town.

The Harinera del Guadaíra is a former flour factory founded in 1934. Its machines used an Austro-Hungarian milling system. In the workshop area, visitors can experience shaping Alcalá bread together with bakers from Alcalá. In this way, the Harinera focuses both on its former technical equipment and on the artisanal shaping of the bread.

History

Molino de la Mina was built between the 14th and 15th centuries as a “de cubo” watermill. The waterfall from an atarjea provided the power for the two millstones. The mill thus brings together the historic construction method, water power and the stones used for milling.

Molino de la Mina has an entrance for visitors and an adjoining interpretation area. This area includes a model of the mill. Explanatory texts and videos convey additional information, while virtual-reality headsets provide another form of presentation. Gamification elements complement the interpretation area. In addition to the preserved historical context, the mill is therefore presented through a model, audiovisual content and digital interpretation elements.

Nature and active trails

At the Monumento Natural Ribera de Guadaíra, visits are possible on designated paths or routes. Sporting activities and active-tourism activities are permitted in designated areas.

The Green Corridor of the Guadaíra River is a network of green routes between Seville and the municipalities of Morón de la Frontera, Alcalá de Guadaíra, Arahal and Carmona. The Guadaíra River serves as the main connecting axis. The corridor therefore describes a route network extending across several municipalities, connected by the river.

On the Guadaíra River, visitors can experience the landscape along the riverbanks by kayak. This form of travel complements the paths and routes on land with an explicitly mentioned experience on the river itself.
