Palma del Río – Culture, Nature and River Landscapes

The walled area of Palma del Río is protected as a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) in the category of Historic Ensemble.

Culture and History

The Municipal Museum has been housed in the Caballerizas building since 1995. It comprises four departments dedicated to archaeology, ethnography, art and the world of bullfighting. The museum has five permanent exhibition rooms covering prehistory, antiquity, the Middle Ages, traditional occupations and art collections.

The Convento de Santa Clara was founded on 13 March 1498 through a founding bull signed by Pope Alexander VI. The convent combines Mudéjar, Renaissance and Baroque styles. Its square cloister, lined with arcades, is considered the architectural element of greatest artistic value.

In the most distinguished rooms of the former convent, the Museo Victorio & Lucchino–Santa Clara presents the creative legacy of Victorio & Lucchino. It displays 60 iconic pieces from collections covering the designers’ entire creative careers. The museum also explains the process of creating a garment, from the designers’ initial idea to its appearance on the catwalk.

The Alcazaba is an Almoravid military fortress with four towers connected by walls and a larger fifth tower known as the Albarrana Tower, called Mesa de San Pedro. The western side of the Alcazaba bordered the bed of the Genil River directly; this served as a defensive moat.

The Huerto Garden of the Alcázar Palacio Portocarrero preserves its original irrigation system and contains citrus varieties ranging from old local varieties to rarities from around the world.

Events and Visitor Information

The Casa Museo Manuel Benítez “El Cordobés” is presented to visitors as an educational and leisure facility. The bullfighter’s story is conveyed there as a story of struggle and overcoming adversity.

The Teatro Coliseo is a cultural venue in Palma del Río with a capacity of 787 spectators. Since 1984, the Palma Feria de Artes Escénicas de Andalucía has been held in Palma del Río, bringing together professionals from theatre, dance and other artistic fields.

The Alcázar Palacio Portocarrero can be visited daily by prior appointment; visitors can explore its historic courtyards and rooms. For all admissions to the Centro de Interpretación del Río Guadalquivir, an additional guest service charge of €1.36 plus 21% VAT is indicated.

River Landscapes and Trails

In the surroundings of Palma del Río, the Los Cabezos Peri-Urban Park contains well-preserved Mediterranean woodland with holm oaks and wild olive trees; the park is surrounded by the Retortillo Stream. The same park also has recreational areas, children’s playgrounds and picnic areas.

The location at the confluence of the Guadalquivir and Genil is considered an ecologically valuable area with a large number of waterfowl nesting on two river islands. The traditional Huerta palmeña on the banks of the Genil includes fruit varieties such as lemons, pomegranates, plums, Perilla de San Juan, persimmons, figs and grapes, as well as vegetables such as tomatoes, lettuce, cauliflower, peppers and broad beans.

The “Un Paseo por el Guadalquivir” route is 3.8 km long, takes about an hour on foot and has a low level of difficulty. After crossing the old bridge over the Guadalquivir, it begins near the Centro de Interpretación del Río and below the Ermita de Belén; the route passes Palma del Río railway station and then continues west along an unpaved path from which the Guadalquivir can be seen.

The “Un Paseo por las Delicias” route offers the chance to observe birds, rabbits and hares. The “Paisajes de la Campilla” route offers panoramic views over the Campiña landscape, which encompasses the areas of La Algaba and La Jara.
