Las Pajanosas: Trails, Nature and Festivals

Las Pajanosas is connected to El Garrobo by the linear Sendero Las Pajanosas–El Garrobo hiking trail. The route is accessible on foot, by bicycle and on horseback. At 8.2 km in length, the trail is classified as easy. Its linear course is the defining feature of the route: it connects the two towns rather than returning to the starting point as a circular trail would. The length and classification provide the trail with a clear framework, while the three stated means of travel determine how it can be used.

Nature

In Las Pajanosas, the Parque de la Zahurdilla is located in a dehesa landscape. This landscape lies at the foot of the Sierra Morena. The park is bordered by the Galapagar and El Sardinero streams. There are several springs and fountains in the Parque de la Zahurdilla. Thus, the park brings together different landscape features: the dehesa at the foot of the Sierra Morena, the two bordering streams, and springs and fountains within the grounds. The names Galapagar and El Sardinero are therefore just as much part of the geographical description as the name Parque de la Zahurdilla.

Culture

At the beginning of October, the Romería del Rosario de Las Pajanosas takes place. After the morning mass, the romería begins with the procession of the Simpecado. The procession takes place on a cart pulled by oxen. During this romería, the route continues to the place known as Las Majadillas in the Parque de la Zahurdilla. The event therefore combines a set beginning in the town with a subsequent route into the park. Both the morning mass and the ox-drawn cart form part of the opening described, before the onward route reaches Las Majadillas.

The Feria de Las Pajanosas, held in honour of the patron saint Nuestra Señora del Rosario, is scheduled for the last full weekend of August. The feria and the romería are two separate festivals with different dates: the feria is associated with the last full weekend of August, while the romería takes place at the beginning of October. Both are connected with Nuestra Señora del Rosario.

History

The parish church of Ntra Sra del Rosario is located at Calle Concepción Soto 5, on the former road to Mérida. The building is simple and designed in the costumbrista style. A small bell gable is located above the main entrance. The church is thus identified both geographically by Calle Concepción Soto 5 and by its location on the former road to Mérida.

Cuisine

The former roadside food stalls of Las Pajanosas along National Road 630, the Vía de la Plata, are now associated with restaurants. These restaurants serve salmorejo and game dishes. The culinary information is also linked to the former function of the roadside stalls and to the explicitly named route. National Road 630 and the Vía de la Plata refer to the same historic road connection.
