La Puebla de los Infantes: Nature, Trails and Sacred Buildings

La Puebla de los Infantes is characterised by a mid-mountain landscape with elevations between 200 and 500 metres. The northern part of the municipality lies within the Parque Natural Sierra Norte de Sevilla. La Puebla de los Infantes is located in Andalusia, an autonomous community in southern Spain. Andalusia comprises eight provinces as well as Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, large cities, white villages, mountain ranges and protected natural areas. Its cultural heritage includes Moorish heritage and flamenco traditions; its landscapes also include coasts, rural inland areas and mountain regions.

Natural Environment and Wildlife

The vegetation of the municipality ranges from xerophilous forests with wild olive trees, holm oaks and carob trees, as well as Mediterranean scrubland, to more humid dehesas with cork oaks, holm oaks, Portuguese oaks and rockroses. The local fauna includes red deer, wild boar, fallow deer, lynxes, otters, golden eagles and eagle owls. Those who orient themselves towards specific landscape forms will therefore find information here on forests, scrubland and dehesas, as well as on larger mammals and characteristic birds of prey and owls. The elevations and vegetation types do not create a uniform landscape impression: xerophilous forests and Mediterranean scrubland are followed by more humid dehesas. Thus, wild olive trees, holm oaks and carob trees stand alongside cork oaks, Portuguese oaks and rockroses. The wildlife is also diverse and, in addition to red deer, wild boar and fallow deer, includes other mammals such as lynxes and otters, as well as golden eagles and eagle owls.

Routes and Activities

Las Palomas–Valle de Castril is a 22.4-kilometre circular route with an estimated duration of five hours. The route can be completed on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. This means that both the distance and timeframe, as well as the possible modes of transport, are established for planning this route. From Seville, the route can be reached via the E-5, A-457 and SE-6102. From Lora del Río, the approach follows the Embalse de José Torán. The Camino del Águila is a 25-kilometre hiking trail classified as a short-distance long-distance trail. Fishing is possible at the Embalse de José Torán. Paramotoring is possible in the area around the Embalse de José Torán. Thus, both fishing and paramotoring are explicitly listed activities at this body of water.

Culture and Architectural History

The Iglesia de Santa María de las Huertas dates from the 15th or 16th century. The Ermita de Santa Ana is a Mudéjar hermitage with transverse arches. Based on its characteristics, the Ermita de Santiago is dated to the 13th or 14th century. Its dating is therefore limited to two possible centuries, while Santa Ana is characterised by its Mudéjar architectural form and transverse arches.
