Hinojos: Doñana, Nature and Traditions

Natural Areas and Trails

Hinojos contributes 23,863 hectares to the Doñana natural area. The Marisma de Hinojos covers 8,500 hectares. As a result, extensive wetlands and wooded areas are among the town’s defining landscapes.

The tourist route is called Hinojos–Almonte–Bollullos Par del Condado. Its starting point is Parque-Feria. From there, it leads into the public forest of “Los Propios”. The section through “Los Propios” passes through a forest with mature pine trees, stands of holm oaks, and Mediterranean scrubland.

A wide variety of birds can be observed in the “Los Propios” area. This variety includes, in particular, birds of prey such as the common buzzard, the booted eagle, and the lesser kestrel. Birdwatching therefore takes place within the same forest area as the pine trees, oak stands, and Mediterranean shrubs mentioned there.

The El Arrayán trail runs parallel to the paved forest road connecting Hinojos with the hamlet of El Rocío (Almonte). El Arrayán has a firm concrete surface and offers plenty of shade. The trail is signposted and has footbridges for crossing streams. It also has only gentle inclines. Its route is therefore further defined by its firm surface, signposting, stream crossings, shade, and low gradient.

Culture and Festival Traditions

Hinojos is home to the Iglesia de Santiago el Mayor. As a Bien de Interés Cultural, it is protected in the “Monument” category.

The Corpus festival of Hinojos is registered as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The registration category is “Actividad de Interés Etnológico”.

During the Corpus festival, decorated streets with foliage and flower arches transform Hinojos into a plant-filled setting.

After the Corpus procession, families as well as groups of friends and neighbors gather for a shared outdoor meal. Acquaintances and visitors from elsewhere are invited to this meal. The shared meal thus follows the procession and includes both local groups and invited guests.

Traditions

El Rociíto is the oldest and most original surviving children’s tradition in Hinojos. El Rociíto includes a pilgrimage to Parque Los Centenales. At this location, children and their families come together for a shared outdoor gathering. The tradition therefore includes both the journey to the park and the subsequent gathering there.

Visitor Center

The “Los Centenales” visitor center is located on the outskirts of Hinojos. The center is situated in the town park of the same name. The A-484 road from Hinojos to Almonte runs alongside the visitor center. The center features an exhibition about the surrounding landscapes. The outskirts, the town park, and the road running past it are therefore part of the center’s described location.
