Culture
The Centro del Flamenco de Lebrija is a public institution intended to bring Lebrija’s intangible flamenco heritage closer to local and visiting audiences. The exhibition “Viaje por los andenes flamencos. Próxima estación: Lebrija” is presented at the Centro del Flamenco. The flamenco of Lebrija is considered distinct there; an arromanzado rhythm shapes a particular style of singing, playing, dancing and jaleos. Lebrija is also one of the towns in the province of Seville included on a flamenco route through the provinces of Seville and Cádiz.
The Teatro Juan Bernabé offers a programme of theatre, singing, music, dance and cinema, as well as other events, galas and ceremonies. The building, which now serves as the Casa de la Cultura, houses an interpretation centre dedicated to Tartessian Lebrija called “Lebrija Tartésica”. Its exhibition room displays a replica of the famous gold candelabras found at a site in Lebrija in 1923. The Punto Nebrija is located in the courtyard of Lebrija Town Hall and houses a prototype of a monument to Nebrija, as well as an area for bibliographic consultation.
Other destinations include Guadalcanal, Brenes, Palomares Del Rio, El Viso Del Alcor, Cañada Rosal, Las Navas De La Concepción, San Juan De Aznalfarache and Dos Hermanas.
History
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Oliva de Lebrija was built in the second half of the 13th century during the reign of Alfonso X the Wise; significant alterations expanded it in the 15th, 16th and 18th centuries. The remains of Lebrija’s medieval fortifications are classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The promontory of the fortifications now serves as a bastion and viewpoint over the surrounding area.
Crafts and Festive Culture
Lebrija has a long-standing craft tradition involving pottery, blacksmithing, leatherworking, basketry and saddlery. A celebration in Lebrija is recognized as a Festival of National Tourist Interest in Andalusia. It normally takes place on the first two weekends of May. During this celebration, residents of a street or square erect a cross made of flowers, wrought iron or wood and decorate it, among other things, with flowerpots, flowers, mantoncillos, blankets and various copper objects. The celebration mainly features habas corchas, that is, beans cooked with salt and eaten cold, as well as caracoles blanquillos from the marshes.
Routes
Lebrija’s municipal tourist information office lists four cultural routes: “Descubriendo la ciudad intramuros”, “Aroma y color de la ciudad tradicional”, “Plazas, espacios para compartir” and “De la Corrdera al Mercado”.
Landscape
El Fontanal is an archaeological site and hydraulic complex that has been connected with the history of Lebrija since its origins. The remains and structures of El Fontanal that are visible today are a heritage site that bears witness to the importance of water in the emergence of urban societies.
