Cañada Rosal: Holy Week, Easter Tradition and Romería

Cañada Rosal is the setting for three processions during Holy Week. They take place between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. On Holy Monday, the Vía Crucis del Santísimo Cristo de la Buena Muerte, Cristo Obrero, passes through the streets of Cañada Rosal. Believers accompany it with traditional penitential songs. Anyone wishing to experience this part of the Easter season in Cañada Rosal can find the Stations of the Cross within the aforementioned period on Holy Monday. The procession thus combines the specified date, the local connection and the religious accompaniment in a public tradition.

Los Huevos Pintados

Every Easter Sunday, Los Huevos Pintados is revived as an Easter tradition in Cañada Rosal. For this occasion, eggs are boiled and painted in various colours. The children then carry the painted eggs through the streets of the town. The little bags in which they are carried are crocheted or made using crochet. Every year, Los Huevos Pintados is complemented by a competition for painted eggs. An exhibition of painted eggs is also held every year. The tradition therefore includes boiling and colouring the eggs as well as subsequently carrying them through the town. The competition and exhibition continue the tradition every year beyond the actual painting of the eggs.

Romería and Finca Municipal “La Suerte”

The route of the traditional Romería leads to the Finca Municipal “La Suerte”. This finca serves as the venue for the Romería. During the traditional Romería, the Virgen is accompanied. The journey there takes more than three hours and is longer than three kilometres. There are stops along the way. At these stops, people sing, pray and dance. The Hermandad Milagrosa also distributes tapas to the participants. An ermita there was inaugurated on 13 April 2008. The programme therefore includes both the longer route to the finca and the event held there. The stops structure the route through song, prayer and dance; the tapas also highlight the Hermandad Milagrosa as an active participant. The inaugurated ermita adds a building with a fixed date to this location.

Places and Buildings

Next to the parish church in Cañada Rosal is the Callejón de Flores Pistón. The alley is freely accessible. The Fuente de la Plaza del Fuero de las Colonias displays the municipal coats of arms of the former colonies. The population of Cañada Rosal originated from these former colonies. Thus, the square brings together both a freely accessible alley and a fountain with a historical connection to the origins of the population.

The Iglesia Parroquial de Santa Ana is a modern building. Its portal has a pointed-arch design. On the right-hand side there is a bell-gable structure.
