Castillo de Utrera stands on a natural hill and comprises defensive walls with defense towers. The castle was built by the Council of Seville on the remains of an old Arab tower; it was first mentioned in 1246 under Alfonso X the Wise.

Castle and Cultural History

Those wishing to learn about the history of the castle and the towers of the Banda Morisca through a museographic presentation can find a dedicated area in the Torre del Homenaje. The ground floor features a model of 18th-century Utrera as well as several historical exhibition units. Casa Surga is a Baroque palace building from the late 18th century that has been transformed into a contemporary cultural center.

Flamenco and Events

Those looking for a regular flamenco event in June will find the Potaje Gitano Festival traditionally held on the last Saturday in June; its origins date back to 1957. The Flamenco Festival del Mostachón is traditionally held on the first Saturday in November at the Teatro Municipal Enrique de la Cuadra. The Teatro Municipal Enrique de la Cuadra currently offers an extensive cultural and events program featuring theater performances, concerts, cinema, and flamenco festivals.

The two traditional flamenco events are therefore spread across June and November. While Potaje Gitano, with its origins in 1957, points to a long history as an event, the Festival del Mostachón links its November date with the Teatro Municipal Enrique de la Cuadra. The theater's program extends beyond flamenco and also includes theater, concerts, and cinema. Thus, the cultural offerings include both festivals held on fixed dates and a broader range of events.

Protected Wetland

The Reserva Natural Complejo Endorreico de Utrera nature reserve is a protected wetland in the municipality of Utrera. It consists of the three shallow lagoons of Zarracatín, Arjona, and Alcaparrosa.
