Nature

The Cascadas del Huéznar in San Nicolás del Puerto consist of two waterfalls and pools formed when the river flows over limestone travertine formations, and are surrounded by a riparian forest of elms, willows, ash trees and alders. The Cascadas del Huéznar were declared a natural monument in 2001. Cerro del Hierro is a karst landscape shaped by erosion, with hollowed-out rocks, tunnels and attractive vegetation.

The Nacimiento de la Rivera del Huéznar is a natural spring in the town centre, from which water gushes intermittently from the ground; a recreational area is located next to it. This recreational area is equipped with bridges, wooden walkways and tables. The Cascadas del Huéznar are currently temporarily closed.

Hiking Trails and Activities

The circular route to the Cascadas del Huéznar starts at the car park next to the El Martinete restaurant and ends there again. The official circular route is 776 metres long, takes 30 minutes and has a medium difficulty level. Swimming is prohibited at the Cascadas del Huéznar; the Playa de San Nicolás downstream is the only place where it is permitted. The artificial beach next to the Puente Romano of San Nicolás del Puerto is created by damming the water with the sluice gates next to the bridge.

The Solana del Calvario trail is a linear, moderately easy hiking trail covering 1.7 kilometres, with an estimated duration of 30 minutes. It connects the Nacimiento del Huéznar recreational area with the artificial beach of San Nicolás del Puerto next to the Puente Romano. The Geo-Ruta San Nicolás begins on the road opposite the Playa de San Nicolás, where the information board marking the start is located. The Sendero Cerro del Hierro leads into galleries and tunnels carved into the rock formations.

El Rebollar is a circular route that goes around the Cerro del Hierro natural monument and, after following the Vereda del Mojón Blanco to San Nicolás del Puerto, reconnects with the Vía Verde de la Sierra. The El Rebollar trail is 8.109 kilometres long, takes approximately two hours and has a medium difficulty level. The Las Dehesas trail starts at the place locally known as La Playa, next to the junction with the road to the railway station, and passes through an extensive area of dehesa landscapes.

The Vía Verde de la Sierra Norte de Sevilla follows a former mining railway line approximately 15 kilometres long, from the Los Prados turn-off to the Cerro del Hierro mining area, which has been declared a natural monument of Andalusia. The nearest stop for intercity buses to the Vía Verde de la Sierra Norte de Sevilla is in San Nicolás del Puerto; public transport with accessible vehicles is available. Abseiling, climbing and caving are possible at Cerro del Hierro.

Culture and History

The Ermita de San Diego is a chapel built in the 15th century in the popular Mudéjar style, with a wooden ceiling and a 20th-century depiction of San Diego by Castillo Lastrucci. The Iglesia de San Sebastián is a single-nave Mudéjar building from the 15th century, with a remnant of a Corinthian column and a rediscovered baptismal font.

The Crucero de Piedra is a stone cross created between 1575 and 1599 on a column of the Corinthian order and points to the Ruta de la Plata. The Puente Romano de San Nicolás del Puerto spans the Galindón River, whose water forms a river beach within the town centre. The historic building was converted into the Punto de Información Cerro del Hierro.

A building rehabilitated several years ago is used in San Nicolás del Puerto for social and cultural purposes and hosts exhibitions, concerts, theatre performances, conferences and local cultural events such as the Noche del Terror and the Festival de Cine La Vieja Encina. The Noche del Terror has been organised in San Nicolás del Puerto since 2003 as a recreational, tourist and cultural event. It uses a route approximately one kilometre long through the forests around San Nicolás del Puerto and receives a different thematic design every year. The Romería de San Diego takes place every year on the second Sunday in May.
