La Puebla de Cazalla: Museums, Cante Jondo and El Pinalejo

Culture and history

La Puebla de Cazalla is home to the Museo Arqueológico y Etnográfico in Hacienda la Fuenlonguilla, a former olive mill that operated from the 19th to the 20th century.

The Museo Arqueológico y Etnográfico presents local arts and customs, as well as the history of La Puebla de Cazalla from the Neolithic period to the Muslim era. An exhibition of 19 photographs is dedicated to the traditional production of solid bricks and roof tiles.

The Museo del Aceite is located in the former mill of Hacienda La Fuenlonguilla, dating from 1858, and reconstructs the olive oil production process from harvesting to extraction. The former living quarters of the owners at Hacienda La Fuenlonguilla can be visited as part of the Museo del Aceite.

The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo José María Moreno Galván is housed in a 16th-century pósito whose original arcade has been preserved. It presents temporary exhibitions as well as a permanent collection featuring works by national and international avant-garde and post-avant-garde artists, including particularly many artists from Andalusia.

The Museo Antonio Fuentes Zurita is located in a chalet; its exhibition is divided into a vestibule and four rooms. It features biographical information, contemporary portraits and bullfighting posters covering Antonio Fuentes’ career from 1892 to 1934.

Castillo de Luna began in the 5th century BC as a defensive structure of the Iberian Turdetani and became a watchtower under the Carthaginians 200 years later.

Traditions and regional cuisine

The Reunión de Cante Jondo, currently held annually at Hacienda Ntra. Sra. del Carmen (La Fuenlonguilla), was established at the initiative of José Menese and Francisco Moreno Galván; the first event took place in September 1967.

During Holy Week in La Puebla de Cazalla, four hermandades hold penitential processions on Palm Sunday, Holy Tuesday, Maundy Thursday, during the Madrugá and on Good Friday.

Typical local dishes and confectionery include aceitunas prietas, jarria, patatas con bacalao, majaillo, stews with asparagus and tagarninas, as well as entornaos.

Landscape and hiking

The El Pinalejo area in the southeast of the municipality of La Puebla de Cazalla covers 9,378 hectares. Its Mediterranean vegetation is dominated by pine trees and accompanied by holm oaks and Mediterranean scrubland.

The El Pinalejo landscape offers opportunities for hiking, mountain biking and camping.

A total of eleven hiking routes are planned in La Puebla de Cazalla, three of which are currently signposted.
