Villanueva del RÃo y Minas brings together several clearly discernible facets of Andalusia: mining history, Roman archaeology, sacred art and a distinctive landscape. Those who seek historical traces beyond the major cities while travelling will find different themes here at specific sites – from the Minas de la Reunión complex to the Munigua archaeological site and the Iglesia de Santiago el Mayor.
Minas de la Reunión: Industrial History and Landscape
The Minas de la Reunión complex is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Conjunto Histórico category. The historic complex comprises industrial facilities as well as associated residential and community facilities related to coal mining. Workplaces, residential areas and shared community facilities therefore form part of this historic ensemble together and reveal different aspects of coal mining.
The Minas de la Reunión complex also constitutes an area of high landscape value. In addition to the buildings and social facilities associated with coal mining, the surrounding landscape is therefore one of the defining features of this place. This means that buildings and landscape are viewed in a shared context when considering the industrial heritage.
Minas de la Reunión has been rehabilitated and is an important part of the tourist resources being enhanced במסגרת the municipal tourism master plan.
Roman Archaeology in the Surrounding Area
The Roman archaeological site of Munigua is located in the surroundings of Villanueva del RÃo y Minas. It includes a walled area approximately 800 metres long, a necropolis, large domus houses, a forum and a sanctuary. The site thus brings together fortifications, a burial area, residential buildings, a forum and a sanctuary at one archaeological location. It is precisely these different components that give the Roman site its multifaceted structure.
Mudéjar Art and Historic Furnishings
The Iglesia de Santiago el Mayor in Villanueva del RÃo y Minas is a Mudéjar-style building. The church contains Neo-Gothic and Neoclassical altarpieces with paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries. This collection is complemented by goldsmith's work from the 16th and 17th centuries.
Pozo 5 and the Hiking Area
Pozo 5 was sunk in 1893. It is the best-preserved element of Villanueva del RÃo y Minas's industrial heritage and comprises buildings of aesthetic and archaeological value. The year points to the long history of the mining site, while the preserved buildings focus attention on the architectural side of this heritage.
As a natural attraction, the Paraje Natural de los Arenales del Parroso complements the municipality's historic destinations. The area is considered suitable for hiking and thus offers another thematic perspective on Villanueva del RÃo y Minas: alongside industry, archaeology and church art, the landscape also serves as a destination for exploration on foot.
