Sanlúcar La Mayor: Churches, Nature and Trails

Sanlúcar la Mayor is one of the municipalities within the protected Guadiamar Green Corridor landscape area. The corridor crosses the municipality from north to south through its central section.

Culture and history

The Iglesia de Santa María has been protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest since 3 June 1931. It was built as a parish church for a suburb located outside and away from the town walls of Sanlúcar la Mayor. The building is constructed of brick; its openings have stone surrounds, and it also features stone columns and stone ribs in the presbytery.

The historic complex of Sanlúcar la Mayor has been listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest since 14 November 2006. The Iglesia de San Pedro del Castillo is the oldest church in Sanlúcar la Mayor. The Iglesia de San Pedro is a three-nave Mudéjar-style building recognised by the Regional Government of Andalusia as an Asset of Cultural Interest.

The tower of the Iglesia de San Pedro is a former Arab minaret that was separated from the mosque by a courtyard. The Iglesia de San Eustaquio is divided into three naves with pointed arches resting on pillars. Construction of the Almohad Wall began at the end of the 12th century under the Almohads; it originally comprised 46 towers. An approximately 65-metre-long section with three towers has survived.

The sculpture of San Miguel is a work in the Gothic Flemish-Burgundian style attributed to Lorenzo Mercadante de Bretaña. It is displayed in the town hall in a case with controlled temperature and humidity. The Casa de Cilla is a typical 18th-century Andalusian building.

Nature and trails

The Guadiamar Green Corridor can be explored on foot or by bicycle for more than 70 kilometres and has a cycle tourism route for this purpose. The route can also be completed on horseback.

The Las Doblas recreation area has a seasonal artificial lagoon crossed by a wooden bridge. Its marsh vegetation is home to a diverse range of waterbirds.

The Ruta Las Doblas is a circular route around the lagoon in the Guadiamar Green Corridor, within the municipality of Sanlúcar la Mayor, approximately 3 km from the town centre. It has a route with limited accessibility barriers and a wooden bridge over the lagoon; birdwatching and observation of the flora and fauna are possible.

The Ruta Camino Viejo – Camino de la Dehesa is an approximately 8-km circular route of moderate difficulty. It passes the Las Doblas recreation area and the lagoon, in the protected natural area of the Guadiamar Green Corridor.

Visits and events

To visit the interiors of the monuments along the Ruta Monumental, you must contact the Sanlúcar la Mayor Tourist Office in advance. The Ruta Monumental begins at a stop on Seville's C5 commuter rail line.

The Feria y Fiestas de Mayo always takes place in May, but without a fixed calendar date. It is held exactly two weeks after the Feria de Sevilla. Its origins lie in a livestock fair that took place on the first of May.

Corpus Christi ends with a procession carrying the monstrance through the central streets and squares of Sanlúcar la Mayor. These streets and squares in the centre are covered with aromatic herbs.
