Los Rosales between Industrial Heritage and Railway Tradition

Los Rosales reveals three different sides of this Andalusian town: the Azucarera San Fernando y Destilería Los Rosales, classified as industrial cultural heritage, sacred architecture and a landscape shaped by the Guadalquivir. The Seville–Córdoba railway line is also part of the town’s history. In July 1914, the Compañía de Ferrocarriles de Madrid a Zaragoza y a Alicante (MZA) decided in Madrid to change the name of the original station on this line to “Los Rosales”.

Los Rosales station is served by Renfe’s commercial C3 and C1 lines. From Seville Santa Justa, it can be reached on the C1 Cercanías line. The station and railway line therefore connect a specific transport link with the history of the town. The current line allocation and the historical decision to change the name add a transport-history perspective to the view of Los Rosales.

Church, Images and Feast Days

Construction of the Parroquia Nuestra Señora de Fátima began in 1960. The church has contemporary architecture, is a single-nave building and has a simple altarpiece. It houses the images of Our Lady of Fátima, the Santísimo Cristo de la Expiración and Our Lady del Patrocinio. The latter two images are carried in procession on Good Friday. This traditional Good Friday procession begins on 3 April at 9 p.m. at Plaza Pío XII, passes through various streets of the town and returns there at around 1:30 a.m. At the parish church, construction date, spatial form, furnishings and procession route thus come together.

The Día de Nuestra Señora de Fátima on 13 May is a local festival. The Romería de la Virgen de Fátima takes place on the first Sunday in May. Both dates anchor religious traditions at different points in the May calendar: one on a fixed date and the other on a Sunday.

Paths in the Guadalquivir Landscape

Los Rosales can also be explored through its paths and landscape beyond the church and feast days. A paved footpath connects Los Rosales and Tocina; the route can be completed on foot in around 20 minutes. In the northern part of the municipality of Tocina-Los Rosales lies the Área Natural de La Playita. There are picnic areas and numerous paths in a landscape shaped by the Guadalquivir. The paved connecting path and the natural area represent two clearly different types of paths: a connection between towns and paths within a river landscape.

The Tocina-Los Rosales area also has various nature routes that can be explored on foot, on horseback or by bicycle. These nature routes complement the paved path and the paths in the natural area with further opportunities to explore the landscape. Alongside the religious and industrial themes, this leaves a distinct space for paths and landscape.
