La Rinconada: Trails, Water and Archaeology

The Eje del Agua is a walking and cycling route more than 20 kilometres long. It connects Parque El Majuelo with Parque de Las Graveras. Parque El Majuelo is a riverside park expanded to 210,000 square metres. La Rinconada also has a cycling network approximately 40 kilometres long.

Nature and Trails

Parque Central de La Unión is a 2.8-hectare green space. It includes walking and cycling paths, recreational areas and a body of water. Together with the Guadalquivir, Parque El Majuelo is used as a route for rowing and canoeing. A body of water is used for training in rescue work, open-water swimming, and water-based tests in triathlon and ultra-endurance competitions.

Culture and History

The “Francisco Sousa” Archaeological and Palaeontological Museum displays pottery from Cerro Macareno. The pottery dates from the 8th to the 1st century BC. It includes Tartessian, Phoenician, Greek, Iberian and Roman pieces.

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves is a 15th-century Mudéjar church. La Rinconada Town Hall is an example of Andalusian regionalist architecture.

Cerro Macareno is protected within the municipality of La Rinconada as an archaeological zone and as a cultural asset of special cultural interest, a Bien de Interés Cultural. The artificial settlement mound preserves the remains of a Tartessian and Turdetanian settlement from the 1st millennium BC.

The Museo Urbano al Aire Libre features artistic interventions using painting and sculpture. They are located on façades, in neglected areas, on transformers and at roundabouts, and extend across various districts of La Rinconada. The museum can be explored on a walk along catalogued urban art interventions.

In La Rinconada, the University of Seville and UNED hold a seminar every year, around November, on current developments in palaeontology and archaeology. More than 200 participants attend the seminar.

Festivals and Food

The Feria del Abrazo is part of La Rinconada’s recurring seasonal festival calendar.

The Romería de San Isidro is an annual pilgrimage from the parish church of San José to El Toril. It takes place every first weekend in October.

During the Romería de San Isidro, participants share food in El Toril and spend the afternoon there before returning to San José.

The Fiesta de la Patata in La Rinconada is associated with the start of the potato harvest. It includes tasting a potato and meat stew.

The Hacienda Guzmán Living Olive Museum includes more than 150 different olive varieties.

Getting There

The C1 Cercanías line between Seville and Lora del Río provides access to the La Rinconada and El Cáñamo stations in San José de La Rinconada.
