Huévar Del Aljarafe: Church, Festivals and the Corredor Verde del Guadiamar

Culture and History

Huévar Del Aljarafe is home to the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. It was completed in 1510 in a Gothic-Mudejar style.

The church has three naves. In addition, there are three later chapels dating from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Passageways run beneath the entire Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. These converge in an underground crypt. The crypt presumably served as a Christian refuge during the Muslim period.

The Hacienda del Marqués de la Motilla dates from the 18th century. It is particularly distinguished by its brick portal. Part of an Arab mill has been preserved in the hacienda. Beneath it is a press for processing olives into oil.

Festivals and Culinary Traditions

On January 20, Huévar Del Aljarafe celebrates the feast day of its patron saint, San Sebastián, with the Fiesta de la Caldereta. The fiesta lasts about five days. All the town’s brotherhoods take part.

The approximately five days of the fiesta form a clearly defined period in the town’s annual calendar.

During the fiesta, four brotherhoods compete in a Caldereta competition. Visitors can try the traditional dish at each festival hut. They can also sample various tapas and drinks there free of charge.

Caldereta de Borrego is considered a typical dish of Huévar Del Aljarafe. It is eaten mainly in winter and during the San Sebastián festival.

Torta de hornazo is a traditional sweet from Huévar Del Aljarafe. It is associated with Easter Sunday.

Processions Throughout the Year

On Palm Sunday, more than one hundred children dressed as Hebrews accompany the Santísimo Cristo del Amor on his triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

Holy Week in Huévar Del Aljarafe begins on the Thursday before the Friday of Sorrows.

On this Thursday, the titular images of the Sangre brotherhood are transferred from the Iglesia Parroquial Ntra. Sra. de la Asunción to its brotherhood house.

The transfer takes place for the procession on Maundy Thursday. The “Gloriosa Resurrección de Jesús” procession takes place on Easter Sunday.

The processions take place on Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Easter Sunday.

In Huévar Del Aljarafe, this procession was revived as an older local tradition.

Nature and Trails

The Corredor Verde del Guadiamar is divided into four sections. These sections pass through floodplain, agricultural, marshland and dehesa landscapes.

Together, the Corredor Verde del Guadiamar stretches for approximately 67 kilometres along the middle and lower Guadiamar.

The Corredor Verde passes through four named landscape areas along the middle and lower Guadiamar.

Cycling and horseback riding are recommended on the Corredor Verde del Guadiamar. Some sections can be explored on foot.

The Corredor Verde del Guadiamar is designated as a protected landscape.
