The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Cuatrovitas is the sanctuary of the Virgen de Cuatrovitas; the Romería de Cuatrovitas takes place there every year on the fourth Sunday in October. The brick minaret of the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Cuatrovitas was built around the 12th century and is derived from Syrian towers. After the Reconquista, the ermita was converted into a Christian temple. Las Noches de Cuatrovitas is a music series held at the foot of the Almohad minaret of Cuatrovitas in a historic setting.
Culture
The parish church of San Martín de Tours houses four paintings by Francisco de Zurbarán depicting Santa Catalina, Santa Inés, Santa Lucia and San Blas. The four Zurbarán paintings in the parish church of San Martín de Tours are dated to between 1640 and 1645. Archaeological remains associated with a purification ritual or a hammam have been preserved in the Aldea de Cotrovita. Santiago Apóstol is celebrated on 25 July; on this occasion, the patron image of Santa María de Cuatrovitas is carried from its country chapel to the town. During the Romería de Cuatrovitas, the image of Cuatrovitas is brought from Bollullos to its hermitage in a silver canopy on an ox-drawn wagon.
History
The Ruta de las Haciendas follows signposted paths between historic rural country estates whose origins date back to Roman times. A water reservoir from the Almohad period has been preserved near the historic country estates of Bollullos de la Mitación.
Nature
The Centro de Naturaleza de La Juliana is located in a century-old pine forest. The pine forest is considered a passageway for birds to Doñana National Park. The Centro de Naturaleza de La Juliana has the “Bosque Suspendido” treetop adventure park. “Bosque Suspendido” is considered the first treetop adventure park built in Andalusia. Tandem jumps are offered for people who have no previous experience in this sport. The private Aeródromo La Juliana is intended for visitors and pilots; access and parking are subject to mandatory fees, while the grounds are under video surveillance around the clock.
Cuisine
The Ruta de la Tapa y el Mosto is a recurring gastronomic event featuring traditional and innovative tapas accompanied by locally produced mosto. The mosto from Bodegas Salas, made from the Pedro Ximénez grape variety, is foot-trodden in Montilla, fermented in twenty chestnut-wood casks and then bottled by hand. At Bodega Salas, visitors can sample traditional regional stews and grilled meat with the mosto fermented in the winery’s own casks.
