Alcolea del Río: Roman Heritage and River Landscape

Culture and History

To the north of Alcolea del Río, in the La Mesa area, lie the remains of the ancient Roman city of Canama; a large number of tombs were found there.

The Ciudad Romana de Arva is an archaeological attraction and is one of the two Roman settlements associated with Alcolea del Río. The archaeological remains of the Roman settlement of Arva near Alcolea del Río include baths, pools, and fluted columns with Corinthian capitals.

A parish church in Alcolea del Río was built in the Gothic-Mudéjar style. The parish church preserves an 18th-century altarpiece that came from the Santa Ana church in Carmona.

The single-nave chapel known locally as “El Cristo” dates from the 18th century. In front of its whitewashed façade, it is decorated with flowerpots from the neighborhood.

The Arab mills of La Aceña are of Arab origin and were still in use during this century. Visiting the Molinos Árabes de la Aceña is currently severely restricted due to the poor condition of the walkways and floors.

Nature and Paths

Opposite the built-up area of Alcolea del Río, the banks of the Corbones, a former course of the Guadalquivir, feature a natural gallery forest and form a landscape and ecologically valuable natural area.

Alcolea del Río has a river-shaped natural landscape that contrasts with the surrounding olive, orange, and peach groves. Calle Betis offers a riverside walking route along the Guadalquivir.

The stage “ALCOLEA DEL RIO – VILLANUEVA DEL RIO Y MINAS: CIRCULAR SIERRA NORTE-VEGA ETAPA 10” is a 7.5 km linear route of low difficulty. The “Circular Sierra Norte-Vega Etapa 10” route is accessible on foot, by bicycle, and on horseback. It is signposted and has a distance of 0 m from the town center.

Getting There

The drive from Seville to Alcolea del Río takes you along the A-4 motorway, exit 506 at Carmona, and then via the SE-4107 and SE-4104 roads.

Alcolea del Río can be reached from Seville via the C3 railway line and by bus from the Plaza de Armas bus station. The station is located outside the town center and has no public transport connection.

Local Cuisine and Events

Traditional dishes from Alcolea del Río include Boronías, Garbanzos Pelaos, and Papas Arrebujón. The Mercado Medieval takes place in the last week of November or the first week of December.
