El Saucejo: Church, Hacienda, Route and Regional Specialties

Culture

El Saucejo is home to the Iglesia Parroquial de San Marcos Evangelista, which has three naves. Large arches separate these naves from one another. The arches rest on Tuscan stone columns. The bell tower of the Iglesia Parroquial de San Marcos Evangelista is made of exposed brick. It is crowned by an octagonal, tile-clad spire. The church was rebuilt in the mid-18th century. It was built over an earlier chapel or church dating from the late 16th century.

History

The Hacienda de San Pedro dates from the 18th century. It was built over older structures dating from the late 16th century. Its complex comprises a residential building, a chapel, two mill towers and several agricultural buildings. These buildings are arranged around a courtyard. The Hacienda de San Pedro represents the origin of the present-day town of El Saucejo.

El Saucejo Town Hall stands on the site of former grain stores, which were built by the residents after the establishment of the communal Pósito in 1750. The Ermita de San José in Navarredonda dates from the 18th century. Its sculptural design defines the building. The Fuente Cuatro Caños is located outside the village of Navarredonda. It was built in the 19th century on the site of an older water source. Water emerges through a stone wall. In the village of La Mezquitilla, the natural landscape and the Fuente del Moro shape the townscape.

Routes

The Arroyo de los Lobos – Las Monjas route begins at the Camino Verde. Its starting point is at the end of Calle Pilar Nuevo. It runs along the GR-246 between Pruna and El Saucejo. The route is 14 km long. It takes three hours. The difficulty level is moderate. The route is considered a linear out-and-back trail that can be used year-round. The 14 kilometres and three hours indicate the extent of the route; the moderate difficulty level is also part of the route information. At the Molino de las Monjas, parts of the former mill structure are still preserved. The millstones used to grind grain have also been preserved there.

Landscape

The Zona Recreativa Vado Yeso is located on the Corbones River. It offers the opportunity to spend a day outdoors by the river. In El Saucejo, local artists create artistic works from esparto grass and leather.

Cuisine

The culinary specialties of El Saucejo include chacinas. Dishes made with regional products are also among them. Bread is still made traditionally in El Saucejo.

Transport

El Saucejo has no train station. The nearest train station is in Osuna. There is a bus connection from the Prado de San Sebastián station in Seville.
