Algodonales: Culture, Trails and Sierra

In the centre of Algodonales, the Iglesia de Santa Ana stands on the Plaza de la Constitución. The church was inaugurated on 6 November 1784 on the foundations of an earlier parish church. On Avenida Constitución, the Ruta del Agua begins at the Iglesia de Santa Ana on this plaza. From there, the trail first leads to Molino Lebrón and then through the alley of El Sesmo to Fuente Baja. It then connects with the Cooperativa Ntra. Sra. del Rosario and from there leads to Fuente de Cristóbal Gómez.

Culture

The old town of Algodonales is designated as an Asset of Cultural Interest. The Ermita de la Virgencita de la Sierra is dedicated to the Virgen de los Dolores. Its architecture combines Neoclassical and Gothic Revival features. At Fuente Alta, there is an adjacent building with former washing places dating from the 19th century. At the hermitage, Neoclassical and Gothic Revival features therefore stand side by side; its dedication to the Virgen de los Dolores is just as much part of its description as the former washing places at Fuente Alta.

Nature

Algodonales is a northern gateway to the Parque Natural de la Sierra de Grazalema. The Sendero Algodonales-Los Nacimientos hiking trail connects the centre of Algodonales with the Área Recreativa Los Nacimientos recreational area and passes through the Sierra de Líjar. The trail also runs through the Canalizo gorge. With a little luck, it offers opportunities to observe large birds of prey as well as the Iberian ibex. Its route therefore includes the town centre and the recreational area, as well as the Sierra de Líjar and the Canalizo gorge. The possibility of observing large birds of prey and the Iberian ibex remains expressly dependent on a little luck.

On the Way

The flying area of Algodonales in the Sierra de Líjar has four launch sites and two designated landing zones. The public Poniente launch site can be reached from La Muela via the CA-9101 and then along a forest track. The launch site has shaded seating and a viewpoint.

History

On the first weekend of May, a historical re-enactment in the centre of Algodonales transforms the town into a depiction of life at the beginning of the 19th century. The depiction includes craft stalls, period-style taverns, costumed performers and a scene of the battle against the French army. The event has been organised since 2005. The re-enactment combines the setting of the early 19th century with specific elements of the life being depicted.
