Discover Cádiz: Gadir, Carnival and beaches

Gadir is one of the oldest Phoenician settlements in the West. The archaeological site preserves eight dwellings distributed across two terraces. These dwellings are arranged around two paved streets.

Culture

The Carnaval de Cádiz is recognised as a festival of international tourist interest. At the same time, it is also recognised as an Asset of Cultural Interest. During the Carnaval de Cádiz, dozens of groups perform their repertoires on the city's streets for one week. Their performances are aimed at local residents and visitors.

The Casa del Carnaval de Cádiz is an exhibition and cultural centre dedicated to the Carnaval de Cádiz. Costumes, songs and audiovisual material are presented there. The municipal Ruta del Carnaval begins at the Palacio de los Marqueses de Recaño. The palace is home to the Centro de Interpretación del Carnaval de Cádiz.

A Roman saltworks was discovered in 1995 on the site of the former Teatro de Andalucía. The saltworks is partly preserved in its entirety in the basement of the new building. The Catedral de Cádiz took 116 years to complete. It combines Baroque and Neoclassical stylistic features.

Since 2003, the Torre de Poniente of the Catedral de Cádiz has provided access to the bell tower via a ramp. The tower offers views across the city. The Museo de Cádiz has an archaeological department with Phoenician and Roman collections. These collections include Phoenician sarcophagi from the 5th century BC.

The Fine Arts Department of the Museo de Cádiz houses paintings from the 16th to the 20th century. They include works by Zurbarán, Murillo and Rubens. The ethnographic department of the Museo de Cádiz displays the traditional puppets of Tía Norica.

Coast

Playa Victoria is a city beach with a broad seafront promenade. The restaurants there serve local cuisine. A large semicircular viewing point is located on the promenade of Playa Santa María del Mar. From this viewpoint, visitors can look out over the historic old town of Cádiz.

Local life

The Rincón Gastronómico is located in the Mercado Central de Abastos. There, visitors can enjoy Cádiz's cuisine on site. The municipal Cádiz Náutica programme offers courses and rental services from two municipal nautical centres.
