Hinojosa del Duque: Culture, Trails and Dehesa

The Church of San Juan Bautista in Hinojosa del Duque, known as the Catedral de la Sierra, is classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest and was declared a national historic-artistic monument on 5 February 1981.

Culture and History

The Catedral de la Sierra was built from the mid-15th century through the 16th century in the Gothic style. The cathedral's sacristy has a Plateresque-style façade attributed to Hernán Ruiz the Elder. The Ermita Virgen del Castillo, dating from the 14th century, stands in the Plaza de la Catedral.

The Pilar de los Llanos is a Renaissance monument from the 16th century and part of the livestock resting area on the Cordel of the Cañada Real Soriana; for centuries, it served as a watering place and as the centre of the San Agustín fairs. The folk play La Vaquera de la Finojosa began in 1998; the entire town of Hinojosa del Duque was brought to the stage.

Holy Week in Hinojosa del Duque is recognised as a Festival of National Tourist Interest in Andalusia. During its processions, hundreds of Nazarenos, bearers, trumpet and drum bands, and residents make their way through the town's main streets.

Museum and Local Life

The Museo Etnológico is housed in a late-18th-century mansion that formerly belonged to a wealthy farming family from Hinojosa del Duque. With exhibition areas dedicated to agriculture, livestock farming, industry and popular religious traditions, the museum portrays everyday life in Hinojosa del Duque and its region. More than 2,000 items were donated or lent by residents of Hinojosa del Duque.

The municipal tourist office in the Museo Etnológico provides local information and stamps pilgrims' credentials.

Trails and Landscape

The Ruta de las Ermitas is a historic circular trail through the town of Hinojosa del Duque; it has a low level of difficulty and is seven kilometres long. There is a car park at the starting point, and the route is also signposted.

The Camino Mozárabe combines a religious and cultural tradition with sporting and tourist use.

The Ruta del Río Guadamatilla runs alongside a centuries-old dehesa with holm oaks; during the winter, thousands of cranes can be observed along it.

Regional Cuisine

Characteristic traditional dishes from Hinojosa del Duque include Olla de Carnaval, Sopa dorada and Lechón.

Livestock farming from the extensive dehesas of Hinojosa del Duque produces ham, cured sausages and other Iberian pork products, including Lomo de orza, Chorizo and Morcilla.
