Armilla: Museum, Festivals and Routes through the Vega de Granada

Armilla is home to the Museo Etnográfico de Armilla, located in the Casa García de Viedma, an 18th-century building. The collection displays agricultural equipment and other work tools from the Vega de Granada. The dating of the house and the origin of the exhibits in the Vega de Granada connect the exhibition with a specific place and its agricultural surroundings. In this way, the museum location, the historic building and the working life of this landscape area are directly linked to one another.

Festivals

Every year on January 17, Armilla holds the Hogueras de San Antón. This festival includes a competition for the largest fires and those that burn for the longest time. The competition therefore judges two clearly defined characteristics of the fire: its size and the length of time it burns. The January date links the festival to a fixed point in the annual calendar.

During the San Antón celebration on January 17, Olla de San Antón is sampled in Armilla. This traditional dish is associated with the celebration of the saint and is therefore part of the culinary side of the feast day. Its tasting is explicitly recorded as part of the celebration on that same January day.

The Cruces de Mayo take place in Armilla on May 3. Neighborhoods and local groups erect decorated crosses in streets and squares. The displays are spread across several public locations because both neighborhoods and local groups take part. The feast day is thus shaped by contributions from the neighborhoods and by publicly decorated places.

San Isidro, Armilla's co-patron, is celebrated on May 15 with a procession of the saint. The date in May and the procession are directly connected with the veneration of the co-patron.

San Miguel is Armilla's largest festival and is celebrated on September 29. The San Miguel festivities also include a procession and an annual commemorative race, or memorial, for the cyclist Manuel Galera. In addition to the festive character, the program, with its procession and memorial, also refers to the cyclist Manuel Galera by name.

Landscape and Routes

The section of the Corredor Verde that includes Armilla lies in the practically flat western Vega de Granada. The Vega is formed by the depression of the Genil River. Thus, at the Corredor Verde, the western location of the Vega, its flat character and its geographical relationship with the Genil come together.

The Corredor Verde allows public use of livestock trails and connects Armilla with other municipalities. Its description therefore encompasses both the public use of the livestock trails and the connection between the town and other municipalities.

The Corredor Verde can be used by hikers, cyclists and horse riders. The three named user groups are presented on an equal footing: hikers, cyclists and horse riders.
