Mountain landscapes and trails around Pampaneira

Pampaneira lies at an altitude of 1,058 metres in a mountainous setting with views of the Mulhacén and Veleta peaks. A large part of Pampaneira’s municipal area belongs to the Sierra Nevada National Park.

The Pueblos del Poqueira hiking trail begins in the upper part of Pampaneira and leads through Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira. The associated circular route covers 8,922 metres one way and takes four hours. Another circular route also begins in Pampaneira, passes through Bubión, is around six kilometres long and takes three hours. The different distances and walking times provide a clear framework for planning the day, without the trails offering the same experience.

The route to La Chorrera begins in Pampaneira and leads to a waterfall around 20 metres high. Canyoning is also possible below the village in the Río Poqueira; the descent is technical and requires experience. The recreational area on the Río Poqueira makes it possible to enjoy the river’s water and the natural surroundings in summer.

Church art, tinaos and local architecture

A defining cultural monument is the Iglesia de la Santa Cruz. It was built between 1726 and 1730 in the Tuscan style and has a wooden Mudéjar coffered ceiling decorated with various triangles and stars. The immersive Tinaos Route leads through the tinaos of Pampaneira and conveys local memories, customs and anecdotes. Its stops are marked with hand-lettered names.

The Ruta de las pinturas de La Policarpa is a free tourist route on which the village serves as an exhibition space for painted slate slabs. The village’s visible features also include Pampaneira’s most distinctive acequia, on Calle Verónica. The rectangular washhouse was built in the 19th century and contains six basins. Pampaneira’s cultural and architectural features include religious art, traditional water management and historic everyday architecture.

Festivals, music and crafts

The Santa Cruz festivities usually take place on the first weekend of May, around 3 May, as well as on the second weekend of August. They include bell ringing, traditional games, a procession, live music and the Entierro de la Zorra. The Sulayr Festival has also been held in Pampaneira since 2016. Tinaos serve as stages for music that combines traditional, ethnic and contemporary styles.

The Feria de Artesanía, Turismo y Agricultura Ecológica de La Alpujarra showcases local cuisine and typical products. Visitors can also take part in workshops, including pottery, textiles and basket weaving. The event thus combines culinary themes with regional crafts and practical insights into traditional techniques.

Getting to Pampaneira from Granada

From Granada, Pampaneira can be reached by car via the A-44, also known as the Autovía de Sierra Nevada-Costa Tropical, taking exit 164 and then the A-348 towards Lanjarón, followed by the A-4132. There is also an Alsa bus connection between Granada and Pampaneira.
