Casares: History, Beaches and Sierra Crestellina

Culture and History
The historic centre of Casares has been designated a Conjunto Histórico ArtÃstico since 1978 and listed as a cultural landscape of Andalusia. The first references to Casares Castle date from 13th-century Arabic sources. The Centro Cultural Blas Infante features permanent exhibitions on the ethnography and archaeology of Casares and offers guided tours of the building.
The birthplace of Blas Infante houses a permanent exhibition on fragments of his life and work and also serves as a tourist information office. The Ermita de San Sebastián houses the image of Nuestra Señora del Rosario del Campo, the patron saint of Casares. The Fuente de Carlos III, also known as Fuente de la Plaza, was completed in 1785 as part of the hydraulic reforms of the 18th century.
The archaeological site of Lacipo is located within the municipality and is identified with the Roman city of Lacipo in the Conventus Gaditanus. The Baños de la Hedionda bathing complex has an originally Roman spring enclosure and adaptation; since 2016, it has featured natural pools. The VI Ruta de las Recoveras commemorates the route between Casares and the border with Gibraltar, which some women from Casares followed while smuggling goods of little value.
Nature and Trails
The Sierra Crestellina Paraje Natural nature reserve is located within the municipality of Casares. Sierra Crestellina is home to a breeding colony of griffon vultures. The hiking trail to Sierra Crestellina begins at a turn-off about 500 metres from the junction leading to the entrance to Casares.
A 20.5-kilometre hiking stage leads from Genalguacil through shady forests with views of the Strait of Gibraltar to the historic centre of Casares. Another hiking stage begins in Casares and passes through the cork oak forests surrounding the historic centre. The linear route to the fluviokarst canyon is accessible year-round from the access point via the Llanos de la Utrera and is 2.4 kilometres long.
Beaches
Casares has a total of four beaches with sanitary and lifeguard services. Playa Ancha is an urban beach with a seafront promenade. Playa Piedra Paloma is a dog-friendly beach. Playa Chica can only be reached via footpaths.
Cuisine
Casares cuisine includes gazpacho casareño. The cheeses of Sierra Crestellina are artisanally made from goat's milk. Degusta Casares includes workshops on making morcilla casareña and cheese.
Degusta Casares is a gastronomic and cultural fair in the historic centre of Casares; the 2026 edition took place on 18 and 19 April. During the gastronomic fair, historical interpretation routes through the town are offered over the event weekend.
Festivals and Film
The Feria de Casares takes place over four days on the first weekend of August in the historic centre of Casares. It includes dance events with orchestras in La Carrera and on Plaza de España. The Rosa Fina de Casares Festival presents flamenco and Andalusian music; the event was the ninth edition.
The XIII Festival Nuevo Cine Andaluz de Casares showcases Andalusian feature and documentary films, short films and photography, and includes educational activities; it takes place from 2 to 10 October 2026.
